Zuccotto is a hemispherical Italian iced dessert consisting of concentric layers of sponge cake, cream and chocolate. It is originated in Florence, and its shape is said to have been inspired by the cupola of the local Duomo, but its name had rather more down-to-earth beginnings. It is a Tuscan variant of zucchetto, ‘skull-cap’. This is in turn is derived from zucca, ‘gourd, bald pate’, which also produced zucchini.
