Arab historian and hadith scholar of the preliterary period in Medina. Transmitted material about Muhammad and his Companions and frequently appears in the isnads of works by historians, biographers, and hadith collectors. A large quantity of material is ascribed to him, providing the basis for books by Ibn Ishaq (d. 767) and al-Waqidi (d. 823), especially in detailing Muhammad's battles. Alleged by some to have been the first to write down hadith material.
