Israeli violinist and conductor. Leventritt Award 1967, sharing 1st prize with Kyung‐Wha Chung. Début with NYPO 1969. Eng. début 1969 Brighton Fest. but he had appeared on tv and made a recording in 1968. Salzburg Fest. début 1970. World‐wide reputation as soloist and as chamber mus. player with Barenboim, Perlman, etc. Superb exponent of Elgar conc. Also plays va. Began to be soloist/dir. in baroque music 1971. Debut as cond., London 1974 (New Philharmonia), later guest cond. of NYPO, Boston SO, Los Angeles PO. Mus. dir. St Paul Chamber Orch., Minn., 1980–7.
