(b Fürth, nr Nuremberg, 14 June 1726; bur. London, 5 Dec. 1790). German-born English harpsichord and piano maker. He worked briefly for Shudi and in 1761 set up on his own. He is best known for his square pianos, of which the earliest surviving one dates from 1766. J. C. Bach gave the first solo piano performance in England on his Zumpe instrument.
