Quick Reference

Genes of the zygote that are important in early development. Many early developmental cues are provided by maternally derived products (see maternal effect gene) but some are translated products of mRNA transcribed from the zygotic DNA. Genomic imprinting may, however, determine whether the maternal or paternal allele is expressed and the zinc finger protein Zfp57 (the product of a maternal zygotic effect gene) contributes to the embryonic maintenance of these imprints.
