Basophilic cells (gastric chief cells) with extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum found in the gastric glands of the stomach. They secrete pepsinogen, gastric lipase and rennin in response to cholinergic signals from the vagal nerve or hormonal secretagogues such as gastrin and secretin. Compare parietal cell.
