Also referred to as school holidays, these are the periods of time between terms when a school, college, or university does not hold full‐time classes. Traditionally the three main vacations are at Christmas, Easter, and Summer. Colleges and universities do not ‘close’ during periods of vacation (except for statutory bank holidays), and teaching staff are not automatically entitled to take leave during these breaks in teaching although they constitute a vacation for full‐time students. In schools, teachers may be required to attend during vacations for meetings and continuing professional development events. See also term.
