Founder of the Tulinid dynasty in Egypt and the first Muslim ruler of Egypt to annex Syria. Introduced administrative and agrarian reforms, encouraged industries, and supported cultural activities. Founded a new capital, al-Qatai (870), and established splendid buildings, the most famous of which is his mosque, which still stands in Cairo.
