Quick Reference

A heterotrimeric enzyme (AMP-activated protein kinase, EC 2.7.11.1) found in two major forms, AMPK1 and -2, with a catalytic α subunit (550 and 552 aa) and regulatory β (270 and 272 aa) and γ (331 and 569 aa) subunits. It is activated by phosphorylation by AMPK kinases (e.g. LKB1), some of which are stimulated by adiponectin. Phosphorylation by activated AMPK inhibits fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis and switches cells from ATP consumption towards ATP production.
