An accumulation of granulation tissue (fibroblasts and endothelial cells) and inflammatory cells at the apex of a non-vital tooth. The bone and periodontal ligament is destroyed by infection from the non-vital tooth and appears as a radiolucency (dark area) on a radiograph.
