Quick Reference

A spore produced by some diatoms (Bacillariophyta) following a series of cell divisions in which daughter cells become progressively smaller. This sequence ends with the release of a naked auxospore which expands before its siliceous cell wall forms. Auxospores can also result from apomixis, parthenogenesis, or sexual reproduction.
