A group of C-type RNA tumour viruses (Oncovirinae) responsible for various avian leukaemias and tumours. Some are replication-defective and require helper viruses, although the avian lymphatic leukaemia viruses (ALV) are replication-competent. Avian erythroblastosis virus (AEV) has two transforming genes, v-erbA and v-erbB (c-erbB is the gene encoding the epidermal growth factor receptor. Avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV) carries v-*myb and causes a myeloid leukaemia; avian myelocytomatosis virus (AMV) carries v-*myc.
