As an academic specializing in the late 17th century, he donated his private collection of books on the period to the University of Otago. His most important contributions to scholarship were as the editor of Evelyn’s diary, (1955), and of the correspondence of Locke (1976–89). He was a benefactor to the Bodleian, British, and London libraries.
