The principle that afferent neurons enter the spinal cord dorsally (from the back), whereas efferent neurons issue from the spinal cord ventrally (from the front). See also dorsal root, ventral root. [Named after the Scottish anatomist Sir Charles Bell (1774–1842) who discovered it in 1811 and the French physiologist François Magendie (1783–1855) who rediscovered it independently in 1822]
