Florentine architect who settled in Rome in the 1540s. He designed the Porta del Pòpolo (1561–4), unquestionably his best work, and was appointed Architect to the Papal Palace for life in 1567, in which capacity he supervised construction of the Castel Sant'Angelo, various fortifications, and the church of San Martin degli Svizzeri.
