Pennsylvania-born architect, educated in Stuttgart, Hamburg, and Berlin. He set up a practice in London with Percy Christian Gibbs (1864–1904) in 1889, designing Harley House, Marylebone Road (1904), and Portland Court, 160–200 Great Portland Street (1904–12), both impressive blocks of mansion-flats. 80 Portland Place (1909) has a distinguished Classical façade with strong French and American influences.
