An order of medium-sized to large acrocarpous mosses. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped; each usually has a nerve and a border of distinct cells. The capsule is spherical to cylindrical, inclined or drooping, with a double peristome. There are many genera, found in a wide range of habitats.
