British dancer and director. She trained at the Royal Ballet School and won the 1980 Prix de Lausanne. She joined the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden in 1981, was promoted to principal in 1992 and became noted for her performances in ballets by MacMillan and Forsythe. After retiring from the Royal in 2001 she became artistic director of ROH2, the organization supporting new and small-scale productions at the Royal Opera House. She has written several books, including Dancing Away (1998) and made numerous appearances on radio and television as a presenter of dance-related programmes.
