The professional association for personnel/human resource practitioners in the UK. It offers advice and support to its members as well as promoting good practice and providing the accreditation for professional training courses and qualifications in personnel management. However, unlike other professions, such as accountancy, personnel/HR specialists are not obliged to become members of the CIPD, or to take professional qualifications. Nevertheless, most of the leading firms insist on CIPD membership and qualifications for their personnel staff. The CIPD has over 120,000 members. It was formerly titled the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) but merged with the Institute of Training and Development in 1994 and became the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD). The IPD was awarded a Royal Charter on 1 July 2000 and formally changed its name. The award of the Charter symbolizes the increasing stature of the IPD and has increased both its potential to attract personnel professionals into membership and the weight that is given to its opinion in public policy discussion of employment issues.
