Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) has the statutory duty of reporting on the effectiveness of all police forces and police authorities (s 55, Police Act 1996). There is a Chief Inspector of Constabulary and five Inspectors, appointed by the Home Secretary, each with a team of staff officers and support staff in each of the four regional HMIC offices.
