(1811–77) Confederate general and governor of Mississippi. During the Mexican War (1846–48) he raised a volunteer company and served as colonel of the 2nd Mississippi Infantry. He was appointed Jefferson Davis's replacement as major general of Mississippi state troops in 1861. In 1863 Clark was elected Mississippi's second and last Confederate governor. He formally surrendered Mississippi to Union forces on May 22, 1865.
