Quick Reference

A system used for rating and providing information about the contents of a Web site. For example a content rating system provides information about the suitability of a Web site for children based on the level of sex, nudity, obscene language, and drug abuse. The most important standard for this is the Platform for Internet Content Selection. There are a number of specific schemes for content rating including NetShepperd, RASCi, and Safe For Kids. Content rating systems are used by blocking software to restrict or prevent the viewing of Web content. Such software consults some script expressed in the language of the content rating system before making a decision about restriction.
