A gerontological theory of adjustment to old age, which has been applied to the adjustment of athletes to retirement. The continuity theory states that satisfactory adjustment is associated with integration between stages of the life cycle. It stresses the value of continuing activities in old age (or in retirement), which were of value in middle age (or before retirement). It maintains that the best adjusted individuals will replace lost roles with new ones.
