One of the early Arhats. His name means ‘the junior of the footpath’ and derives from the fact that he was the younger of two brothers both born by the side of the road. Both became monks.and while his clever older brother Mahāpanthaka quickly became an Arhat, Cūlapanthaka was slower at his studies and only reached the goal when the Buddha gave him a personal teaching.
