The department of state responsible for education and training between 2001 (before which it was known as the Department for Education and Employment) and 2007, when it was replaced as a result of the reorganization of governmental departments. Two new departments took over its remit: the Department for Children, Schools, and Families and the Department for Innovation, Universities, and Skills. The title of the DfES was significant in that it brought together general education and skills training under one remit.
