In inferential statistics, a test of the significance of a departure from the null hypothesis in one direction only, so that a departure in the opposite direction, no matter how large, is attributed to chance. In a non-directional test, a departure from the null hypothesis in either direction results in its rejection. See also 1-tailed probability. Also called a 1-tailed test.
