Quick Reference

A name often given to the outer nine sets of microtubules in the axoneme, although strictly-speaking only one (the A tubule) has a complete set of thirteen protofilaments. The B tubule has only ten or eleven protofilaments, and shares the remainder with the A tubule. Dynein attached to the A tubule makes transient connections to the B tubule of the adjacent doublet and undergoes a conformational change before detaching: this generates sliding movement between doublets which is transformed into bending of the cilium or flagellum.
