French novelist and dramatist. A pioneer of the romantic theatre in France, he achieved fame with his historical dramas, such as Henry III et sa cour (1829). His reputation now rests on his adventure novels, especially The Three Musketeers (1844–45) and The Count of Monte Cristo (1844–45).
