Salisbury Professor of Sanskrit and Comparative Philology at Yale University (1926); visiting professor at Benares Hindu University (1953–4). Edgerton was a linguistic scholar who produced over two hundred works on Indian textual traditions, including a Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit Grammar and Dictionary. His exceptionally literal translation of the Bhagavadgītā is still widely used by Western students of Sanskrit.
