A type of art, which began to establish itself in the 1960s, in which the artist creates a three-dimensional space to enclose the spectator and involve him in a whole range of sensory experiences—visual, auditory, kinetic, tactile, and sometimes even olfactory. The spectator was encouraged to become a participant in the ‘game’ or happening. Exponents of Environment art included Allen Kaprow, Ed Kienholz, and Claes Oldenburg.
