Quick Reference

Class of oligosaccharide antibiotics with high activity against Gram-positive organisms. Although known for some time they are now being used to treat antibiotic-resistant S. aureus. Several variants have been isolated from the fermentation broth of Micromonospora carbonacea var africana. Everninomicins and avilamycin bind to the same site on the bacterial 50S ribosomal and resistance can arise either through sequence variation in ribosomal protein L16 or changes in the peptidyltransferase domain of 23S ribosomal RNA.
