The generic term used during the Second World War (1939–45) to describe an assembly of auxiliary vessels, such as oilers, repair ships, ammunition ships, provision and store ships, etc. This accompanied a fighting fleet to sea on operations and enabled it to remain operational for long periods without having to return to port. The term now usually employed for the function is afloat support.
