(1858–1911), after education in his native New Hampshire and graduation from Brown University (1882), became owner, editor, and humorous columnist for the Saturday Union of Lynn, Mass., and then writer in Boston for other papers. His homespun, humorous poems, of which the best known is The House by the Side of the Road, were collected in volumes including Back Country Poems (1892) and Songs of the Average Man (1907).
