Quick Reference

An introductory course, or one at a basic level, designed for beginners who are unfamiliar with, and lack the ‘foundations’ of, a subject. Students may take a foundation course as a first step in their progression to more advanced qualifications. In the vocabulary of the National Qualifications Framework, ‘foundation’ has a measurable meaning in terms of level, and refers to the most elementary, or ‘entry’, level of National Vocational Qualification, a level below that at which most trainees will commence their training. In the context of the Open University, too, ‘foundation course’ has a very specific meaning, in this case referring to the first, more general, stage of studies which some students undertake before going on to focus on their chosen degree subject.

Subjects: Education.
