German-born American architect, a pupil of Mies van der Rohe, who in 1956 joined I. M. Pei as a partner. Among the projects with which he was associated may be cited the Jacob Javits Convention Center, NYC (1985–6), the Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, DC (1986–93), the San Francisco Public Library, CA (1992–6), and the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Centre, Washington, DC (completed 1998. The architectural firm became Pei Cobb Freed, the other member of the triumvirate being Harry N. Cobb (1926– ).
