The d enantiomer is an important regulator of the glycolytic and gluconeogenic pathways. It inhibits fructose 1,6‐bisphosphatase and activates phosphofructokinase, and its concentration is controlled by the phosphofructokinase (def. 2) and fructose 2,6‐bisphosphatase activities of a 49 kDa protein.
