(1825–1901), born and educated in London, came to Australia in 1851 because of ill health. He was co-editor of the Register 1853–55 then became assistant editor of the Sydney Morning Herald in 1856 and editor 1873–85. He edited the Picturesque Atlas of Australasia (1886–88) and was a member of the NSW Legislative Council 1887–92. His son was Sir Robert Garran.
