Adam Gifford was born in Edinburgh on 29 February 1820 and died there on 20 January 1887. Educated at Edinburgh University, he was called to the Bar in 1849, and in 1870 nominated as a judge, taking his seat in the Court of Session as Lord Gifford. He retired in 1881 on grounds of ill-health.
