The overall system that obtains standardized observations from all parts of the world, coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization on behalf of the 185 member countries. One of the three core components of the World Weather Watch. Observations are received from a vast range of different types of facility, including manned sites and automatic weather stations on land, ships and drift and anchored buoys at sea, aircraft and radiosondes in the atmosphere, and both geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites.
