A small family of herbs whose leaves are mostly in a basal rosette, and whose tiny flowers are aggregated into disc- or dome-shaped heads. The ovary is superior, the corolla tube is 5-lobed and 2-lipped, and there are 4 stamens and 2 stigmas. There are 10 genera, with about 250 species, mainly from Europe, N. Africa, and the Near East. They are cultivated for their flowers.
