Quick Reference

To grasp tightly or to take a firm hold. The palm grip is a method of holding a hand instrument to give power to the working tip. The non-working end of the instrument is supported by the palm of the hand; the four fingers are bent around the instrument from one side, the thumb from the other side. When using the pen grip, the hand instrument is held between the tips of the thumb and forefinger and the lateral side of the last phalanx of the middle finger. This grip may be modified so that the instrument is gripped by positioning the tips of the first three fingers (forefinger, middle finger, and ring finger) and thumb against the instrument with the phalanxes bent ( modified pen grip); the thumb and forefinger are positioned opposite each other.
