Quick Reference

(1002–69).

A Ch'an master of the Lin-chi school in the early Sung dynasty period. His line, along with the line of Yang-ch'i Fang-hui (992–1049) constituted the two major lineages of Lin-chi Ch'an during the Sung; however, Huang-lung's line died out before the end of the Sung. It was Huang-lung's Ch'an that Japanese Rinzai founder Eisai (1141–1215) brought to Japan.
