An aminoglycoside antibiotic from Streptomyces hygroscopicus that induces misreading of aminoacyl-tRNA by distorting the ribosomal A site and the ribosomal translocation process. Toxic for both pro- and eukaryotic cells and used as an animal food additive (Hygromix) as an anthelmintic. It is a standard selection agent in eukaryotic and prokaryotic transfection; the vector-carried hygromycin-B-phosphotransferase gene, hph, conferring resistance.
