Spanish theologian and founder of the Society of Jesus, who after sustaining a leg wound as a soldier, renounced military life and turned to prayer and mortification. In 1534 he founded the Society of Jesus and became its first general. His Spiritual Exercises (1548), an ordered scheme of meditations, is still used in the training of Jesuits. His feast day is 31 July.
