Quick Reference

A town close to Badrināth in Uttaranchal, it is the site of one of the four Daśanāmi maṭhas (monasteries) founded, according to tradition, by Śaṅkara in the 8th century ce. The monastery fell into disuse in the late 18th century, but with the aid of other maṭhas was revived in 1941. There is however a continuing dispute about who has the best claim to be its head, or Śaṅkarācārya.
