Granted two wishes by her husband, at the instigation of her servant, Mantharā, she forces him to exile Rāma (his son by his first wife, Kausalyā, and the heir-apparent) to the forest, in the hope of installing her own son, Bharata (3) in his place—actions which provide the catalyst for the Epic narrative.
