Cz.‐born baritone (Brit. cit.). Début Brno 1935 (Amonasro in Aida). Prin. bar., Bratislava Opera 1936–9, then settled in Eng. 1940, singing with Carl Rosa Opera 1943–6. Joined EOG 1946, creating Tarquinius in Britten's Rape of Lucretia. Netherlands Opera 1950–1. Member of CG Opera Co. 1951–73. Created Nick Shadow in The Rake's Progress (Venice, 1951), Diomede in Troilus and Cressida (CG 1954), and King Fisher in The Midsummer Marriage (CG 1955). Sang Alberich at Bayreuth Fest. 1960–2. OBE 1973.
