## Quick Reference

The partial differential equation:

∂^{2}*u*/∂*x*^{2} + ∂^{2}*u*/∂*y*^{2} + ∂^{2}*u*/∂*z*^{2} = 0

It may also be written in the form ∇^{2}*u* = 0, where ∇^{2} is called the **Laplace operator**. It was formulated by the French mathematician P. S. Laplace (1749–1827).
