The precursor of dopamine (3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine) that is used as a prodrug to increase dopamine levels in the basal ganglia thereby improving mobility in Parkinson's disease. Usually administered together with a dopa-decarboxylase inhibitor (carbidopa) to prevent peripheral effects of dopamine.
