English statistician specializing in Bayesian inference. Lindley, whose mathematical studies at Cambridge U were interrupted by the Second World War, was appointed to the Cambridge faculty in 1948. In 1960 he established the Statistics Department at U Wales, Aberystwyth, moving in 1967 to UCL. He was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver of the RSS in 1968, and the Guy Medal in Gold in 2002. He was the IMS Wald Lecturer in 1988. The ISBA awards a biennial prize in his honour.
